Unrest In Schools: Who is to Blame?

UNREST IN SCHOOLS: WHO IS TO BLAME?

The country as of late has experienced the worst case of unrest in schools which has led to the destruction of property worth millions through pyromaniac tendencies exhibited by the students. Other negative impact caused by these unrest includes; alteration of the academic calendar, student fights, theft, attacks on teachers, bullying and overall interference of the school administrative system. These factors have caused huge side effects and take a long duration of time to bring things to order. Some of the causes of these unrest include but not limited to; poor administration and mismanagement, congestion within the limited facilities, poor food quality and peer pressure influence via social platforms (Chemutai 2020). It is indeed fitting to get the two sides of the coin in this matter and see who exactly is to blame.

As arson cases continue to arise in Migori County, the Director of Education in Migori, Madam Elizabeth Otieno, pointed fingers at parents stating that they were not doing a commendable job when it came to disciplining their children. She went ahead and called out parents who defended their children when caught in criminal activities. She also pleaded with leaders such as; politicians, teachers and clerics to take initiative and devise mechanisms that will maintain and promote good conduct among the students. The director finally concludes by saying that the society has played a significant role in the moral decay of the students (Odeny 2021).

Cartels have been on the rise for a while now and are to blame for the unrests also. There are incidents which have been recorded where cartel members incite corrupt teachers to persuade the students to strike as a way of opposing the new regulations set out by the Ministry of Education. This was caused by the tough guidelines set out by the Ministry to curb cheating during the National examination process. The corruption rate in Kenya has contributed to this factor because the teachers, who are driven by greed, work hand in hand with these cartels and in return are well compensated for their malicious activities, according to a witness report.

Parents have been on the receiving end of this debacle, with many stating that they are the sole reason of why the students are involved in such atrocious activities. It is not clear whether their disciplining style is not that effective or they just don’t really mind what their children are up to during the holidays. Since the world has evolved with technology, almost all the students have smart phones and can easily communicate with each other. They use these devices to incite one another and plot these crimes via social platforms. The content they are exposed to via televised devices could also play a part in this since majority of the content especially in social media platforms is not regulated.

It is quite unclear on who exactly is to blame for these unrest because many parties are involved. The administrative bodies should therefore work hand in hand to put appropriate and effective systems in place to manage the students and deal with unruly behavior. Severe disciplinary action should be taken on any student who is caught in the act or attempts to partake in any form of unrest hence serving as an example to the rest. The administrative bodies should also create a forum where the pleas and cries of the students are met and not dismissed or ignored. This issue is enormously taking a toll on the education system hence interfering with the development of the nation as a whole.
